George Wolfe Plank, a Philadelphian who took up residence in England, designed 61 fantastical covers for Vogue between 1911 and 1927. His illustration for the magazine’s April 15, 1915, Smart Fashions for Limited Incomes issue features a beribboned peacock preening in her finery, which includes a luxuriously draped shawl and peaked cap. In the shops, the editors noted, “are countless little touches that will make the old gown look almost new. Late spring has brought new parasols, neck-pieces, belts, and a host of other tremendous trifles.”
